I’ve been writing and illustrating stories since I was a horse obsessed eight year old begging my parents to buy me a Shetland pony. When they flat out refused to even consider the idea, I drafted our Beagle-Cocker Spaniel mix as a stand in. She allowed me to hitch her to my wagon, and listened patiently to my daily reports about school and friends. I could always count on her sweet furry self to be there are the end of my bed each morning, and she was always happy to see me no matter what. That is the gift of animals – unconditional love.
The CritterKin series of books, about a goofy pack of 8 mixed breed dogs and their leader Ms. Jenaia, is loosely based on real dogs I’ve known over the years. My goal is to use stories told through the eyes of the dogs to entertain and engage kids while evoking their natural empathy, compassion and kindness. Each book is told through the eyes of one of the eight dogs and is focused around a particular topic or theme like prejudice, fear, feeling different and bullying.
I’ve also been incredibly fortunate to be able to bring the CritterKin books to schools, organizations, conferences and bookstores where I do readings, teach projects, host hands on workshops and give keynotes about the concepts behind the series.
